Preventing Falls, Preserving Independence: Insights from RoSPA

At The Live in Care Company, we’re passionate about providing information and support to help you navigate the often-complex journey of caring for your loved ones. We’re thrilled to share insights from a recent interview with Jules, Falls Engagement Lead at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).

For those unfamiliar, RoSPA is a UK charity dedicated to saving lives and reducing injuries across all ages and activities. Their mission is to create a world where accidents are a thing of the past. Our conversation with Jules was truly enlightening, shedding light on the crucial topic of falls prevention, especially as it relates to older adults.

Challenging the Inevitable: Falls Are Not a Given

We often hear that falls are just a part of getting older, an unavoidable consequence of aging. But Jules set the record straight: “Most falls are avoidable. They have a cause, and that cause can be addressed and controlled.” It’s a powerful message and one we wholeheartedly agree with.

Why RoSPA Matters to Families

RoSPA’s mission is to create an accident-free world, and falls prevention is a huge part of that. They work on multiple fronts: influencing policy, educating professionals, and providing invaluable advice to the public. For families juggling caregiving with their busy lives, RoSPA offers practical training and resources to understand and mitigate fall risks.

The Hidden Dangers: Unexpected Falls and Their Impact

We discussed those sudden, severe falls that seem to come out of nowhere, the ones that can drastically alter a person’s life. Jules pointed out the stark reality: “Across England, every 15 minutes, two people have a hip fracture.” These incidents can strip away independence in an instant.

While some factors like bone fragility in postmenopausal women are known, the lack of detailed national data makes it challenging to pinpoint specific causes for all falls. RoSPA is actively campaigning for the reinstatement of systems that would allow us to better understand and prevent these accidents.

Simple Steps, Big Impact

So, what can families do? Here are some key takeaways:

  • Home Safety:
    • Regularly check lighting, especially at entrances and on stairs.
    • Keep clutter off stairs and walkways.
    • Address potential slip hazards in kitchens and bathrooms.
    • Ensure bedrooms are well-lit for night time mobility.
    • Choose supportive footwear over slip-on slippers.
    • Stair Safety:
      • Make sure handrails are sturdy, and ideally have double handrails.
      • Consider high contrast edges to steps.
      • Avoid patterned carpets.
      • Maintain carpet to prevent tripping.
  • Health & Wellbeing:
    • Focus on overall health and wellness: good diet, hydration, and medication management.
    • Encourage regular exercise to maintain strength and balance.
    • Don’t hesitate to ask for help when needed.
    • Exercise Programs:
      • Consider the science-backed exercise program called “FAME” from the University of Glasgow and Nottingham.

Dispelling Myths and Starting Conversations

It’s easy to trivialise falls, but they can have serious consequences. To start a conversation about safety without causing alarm, focus on collaboration and mutual peace of mind. Emphasise that promoting independence and safety go hand in hand. Avoid scare tactics and work together to find solutions.

Beyond Falls: Other Safety Concerns

RoSPA’s research has highlighted a doubling in accidental poisonings among those over 65. Medication safety is paramount. Additionally, with rising energy costs, it’s crucial to discuss safe heating practices and ensure clear escape routes in case of fire.

Resources and Support

RoSPA offers a wealth of resources, including:

  • The “Fall Fighter” prevention pack.
  • A falls prevention hub on their website.
  • Check sheets for assessing home safety.
  • A video for avoiding falls out and about.

Living Alone: Extra Precautions

For older adults living alone, it’s vital to have a personal alarm or mobile phone readily available. Arrange daily check-ins with family or friends and don’t hesitate to seek help from local authorities.
