Big Ian: A Force of Nature Making Every Day Brighter – An Exclusive from our podcast ‘The Care Cast’

We’re thrilled to share insights from our recent “The Care Cast” podcast interview with the extraordinary Big Ian Donaghy. His story, a tapestry woven with passion, authenticity, and unwavering dedication, is a true inspiration to us all.

“Big Ian”: A Name That Resonates

From the moment Ian introduced himself, it was clear we were in for a unique conversation. “Nobody can spell it. No one can pronounce it, no one can remember it,” he chuckled, referring to his surname, Donaghy. Thus, “Big Ian” was born, a moniker that perfectly captures his larger-than-life presence. Whether he’s hosting national conferences for the CQC or speaking at care shows, “Big Ian” resonates, leaving a lasting impression.

But his “bigness” extends far beyond his physical stature. It’s about filling a room with “enough interest and enough passion to go around.” And that passion is undeniably evident in his diverse and impactful work.

A Champion for Care, Beyond the Podium

Ian’s dedication to the care sector is palpable. He’s a sought-after conference speaker, motivating and inspiring care teams, a passionate dementia campaigner fighting for better social care, and a presentation coach empowering individuals within the sector. “Niche is great,” he explains. “If you are the go-to guy in one area and you are the objective voice that people listen to and rate, well, that’s not a bad place to be.”

His commitment extends beyond speaking engagements. He’s the driving force behind “Awards in a Box,” providing comprehensive award event solutions, and dedicates his time to pro bono initiatives like “A Night To Remember,” a major dementia awareness concert, and “Christmas Presents,” bringing festive cheer to those living alone.

A Life “Careered” Through Experience

Ian’s path to becoming a care advocate is as unique as his name. From a doorman to a teacher, and then headhunted by the home office to run crime reduction in schools, his experiences have shaped his perspective and fuelled his passion. His success in reducing school exclusions from 21 to zero is a testament to his innovative approach and unwavering dedication. He created a program based on the acronym “PRIDE,” fostering a sense of community and providing personalised support.

“We need to fit the right people with the right people,” Ian emphasises. “It’s like care. We are caring for people who don’t quite ‘fit’ in, who are different” This philosophy is at the heart of his work, highlighting the importance of understanding and celebrating individuality.

“Dear Dementia” and the Power of Connection

Ian’s book, “Dear Dementia,” a simple yet powerful collection of messages, has resonated with readers worldwide. It’s a testament to his ability to connect with people on an emotional level and to offer insights that are both practical and profound. “I’d rather people like my ideas than like me,” Ian states. “I need them to have more of a staying power. I need them more to be a Parker Pen than a big Biro. I need them to last.”

He’s passionate about dispelling misconceptions about dementia, emphasising that it’s not just about memory loss and that it’s never acceptable to make jokes about it. He advocates for a person-centred approach, focusing on individual needs and preferences.

Ian’s approach to care is rooted in connection and empathy. He believes in understanding the individual, not just their diagnosis. He encourages care staff to ask questions, to learn about the person’s life story, and to fill in the “missing pieces” of their jigsaw puzzle.

Making Every Day Brighter: Authenticity and Kindness

“I need to be interesting enough to get your interest. I’m not there to fill your time. I’m there to make your day,” Ian says. This philosophy permeates everything he does. His success isn’t built on pretence. He’s simply Ian, a man who believes in the power of genuine connection. “People don’t want someone who says, ‘How do you do? I’ve written four acclaimed books on neurodiversity.’ No, nobody wants that,” he says. “They want somebody who’s proper, who’s doing something cause it matters.”

At 55, Ian’s comfortable in his own skin. He’s reconciled himself to himself, finding happiness in the alignment of his thoughts, words, and actions. This authenticity resonates with people, drawing them to his work and his message.

His life is a testament to the importance of living by one’s values. “Don’t you dare compromise,” he tells his children. “Cause I did. I always did what I thought was right.” This commitment to his values has allowed him to build a career that’s both fulfilling and impactful.

A Choice: Problem or Solution?

When asked what he would change about society’s approach to dementia, Ian’s answer is simple: awareness of choice. He recounts a poignant conversation with a 94-year-old who said, “Lad, dementia ain’t my problem. People are.” Ian believes that everyone has the power to make a difference, even in small ways. “Just try and give people something to leave a little bit of an impression that makes them a bit happier,” he says.

He’s wary of offering prescriptive advice, particularly to those facing a dementia diagnosis. He believes that everyone’s journey is unique, and that the best support comes from shared experiences and community. “You want stories, you want reality,” he explains. “You want, we did this, it worked, we did this, it didn’t work, but it might work for you.”

Kindness: An Addictive Gift

What keeps Ian motivated? The joy of seeing others succeed. He finds fulfilment in mentoring, in creating spaces where people feel like they belong, and in witnessing the impact of his work. “The real joy in life comes when you get joy and happiness from other people doing well,” he says. He views kindness as an addictive gift, a force that multiplies as it’s shared. “It makes you want to do nicer things for other people.”

Embracing Difference, A Legacy of Impact

Ian’s own journey has taught him the importance of embracing difference. “Imagine if all the world was the same, nothing would happen,” he says. “Nothing would work, and nothing would ever change. So we have to value difference.” He surrounds himself with brilliant people who complement his strengths, creating a team that can turn his ideas into reality.

Big Ian’s story is a reminder that one person can make a significant difference. His passion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to care have touched countless lives. He’s a true advocate for those who need it most, and his legacy will continue to inspire for years to come. We at The Live In Care Company are honoured to share Ian’s story, and hope that it inspires you as much as it has inspired us.
